Chemistry’s a funny thing. That’s why you see the guy smooching the gal with a rear the size of Cleveland, and the girl hanging all over her fella who weighs 80 pounds and lisps
We all have the last say, to whom we give our affection to, even if the world collectively scratches it’s head.
And the same goes for animals, bringing me to Ernie, the Poodle next door.
Mary, I’ll call her, had a friend who adopted Ernie and immediately had to leave town, so Mary stepped in to puppysit.
I’ve seen her for years in the neighborhood looking so sad and lonely, but since she’s had Ernie to care for, Mary’s a new person.
So, when her friend came back 6 weeks later, with great reluctance, she gave Ernie back.
Well…Ernie wasn’t too happy either. He stopped eating, stationing himself by the front door mewling in protest.
“Whaddaya mean I have to stay here? I want to be with Mary.”
To the woman’s credit, she called Mary and said, I think Ernie will be better off with you, then went to the ASPCA and adopted another dog.
I just saw them as I was coming in. They were both wearing matching ski sweaters.
His and hers, Mary said.
In the final analysis, all animals choose whom they love, doesn’t matter how many paws we have.
“Right Ernie?”
“WOOF!”

Awwww…so glad Teddy got to go back to his true love. Besides, if you go off for 6 weeks at a time, perhaps you shouldn’t have a dog.

I don’t know the circumstances. But two dogs got homes so that’s pretty great in any event…right?

Sex matters to dogs. Ben was utterly enraptured with Maeve, irrespective of what I did for him. Lola and Smudge adore me, even though Maeve walks, trains, feeds and grooms them. There’s no denying what’s written large into virtually every cell of your body.

They choose their mates alright. I sitting in Starbucks so on cue, Teddy and Mary just trotted by. He’s pulls her along like a pony. He had a few obedience lessons so he’s pulling less. He’s such a silly, happy doggie. And Mary has a new man. 🙂

I love this story, Susannah. So many pet owners would have been jealous or angry that their pet switched allegiance. I’m happy for Mary and Teddy and hope Teddy’s previous owner rescued her own true love too.

I need to ask what kinda dog her friend adopted. It’s a Disney tale or tail, if you will, alright…:)
