Sleepless in Manhattan

When I can’t sleep, rather than count sheep, or even U.S. Presidents, I now count my blessings making a gratitude list from A to Z.

It goes something like this:

A…apples, the air I breathe and my friend Anna, who leaves Mint Milanos with my doorman.

B…books, Basset Hounds, images.jpegblueberries…the color blue.

C…care I give to me, care I give to others, greeting cards and Patrick, the cat, next door.

D…daffodils, dogs and my pal David.

E…Easter, Ed and my Eat-Sleep-Write T-shirt.

F…forest green, St. Francis’s Prayer for Peace, and the extra foam Julie the barista swirls on my latte.

G…grapes, soft grass and God, when he’s not stuck in traffic.

H…health, history, kitten heels, the idea of a heaven, the hearing I still have and the halves of marble pound cake I split with Al, the doorman.

I…ice cream, inner peace, my iPhone connected to my hearing aid and Mr. Imma’s, Heroes of the Week.

J…Jane Austen, peach jam on warm bread, my old beat-up jeans and Mr. Johnny Depp.

K…my friend Karen, Gap khakis, kindness and Bobby Kennedy.

L..love anyway it comes, little black dresses, lemon ginger snaps and Anne Lamott.

M…my oldest friend, Mazzilli I can always count on. Money that I’ve earned.

N…nightfall when the day is done, nestled in bed with snacks and a book in a Hanes T-shirt and a pair of cotton boxers.  NO DEBT!

O…open mindedness, owning my part in all things, Oreos and my favorite oak tree in Central park.

P…Pride & Prejudice, passion, prayer and pie.

Q…salmon quinoa rolls, the sweet man who makes them, and the quiet at the end of the day.

R…running, reading, remembering to give extra thanks for having a roof over my head.

S…warm showers, shrimp cocktails, Patti Smith and Sam my accountant who keeps me out of the Big House.

T…my old, gray Chuck Taylors, the tenderness I feel around dogs and kids.

U…Unity’s 24 Hour Prayer Line, pretty umbrellas, and reruns of the West Wing on YouTube.

V…Charlottesville Virginia, where my friend Mimi rests in peace alongside memories of once being quite the vamp.

W…writing, given the privilege, love and desire to live within the wonder of words.

X…kisses remembered, those in the future, the ones I won’t expect.

Y…saying yes to life no matter what, reveling in the good, growing in its challenges.

Z…my childhood dream I still have of unlocking all the cages at every zoo.

Living in gentle grace, wrapped in gratitude concerned for your fellow man, the earth and all living creatures, could honestly heal, and change the world.

It will certainly change you…

not to mention, the promise of a peaceful night’s sleep.

A…apples, the air I breathe and my friend Anna…  images.png  Tell me, what are you grateful for?

I love this, Susannah. I keep a gratitude journal by my bedside and write 5 things I’m grateful for in every given day. Some days I have to search and the list feels rather inane but I still go to bed with positive thoughts.
I do think your list is fabulous.

What a great sleep solution, Susanna. I’m definitely going to start using this.
I’m most grateful for my loving Pookie, four children, and two grandchildren (and one on the way). I’m also grateful that I grew up with wonderful parents. Aside from family, I’m sooo thankful that I’ve been blessed with good health.

    • This made me tear up Skinny. See, there’s so much we just gloss over every day. Things that we’re so used to seeing and having, the thought of its loss never occurs. I should have added clean air, and penicillin, Spring and you…:)

  5. Beautiful post. There are so many things that I’m grateful for I have to summarize with the thought that each day is a blessing and I am thankful for each one.

  6. I am working hard on being thankful for absolutely everything. It is all perfect, has a blessing (sometimes buried), and I brought it to me, anyway.

  8. What am I grateful for? A third chance of a forever home, my humans for rescuing and sticking by me when it was difficult, Lenny my sidekick and “brother” who has shown me how to play and be happy with another dog and my friends both near and far who communicate with me to make my life happy.
