I couldn’t help getting teary when I saw the art President Biden chose for the Oval Office.
A President can hang artwork from the White House’s own collection, or borrow from museums for his term in office.
President Obama had Lincoln, while President Trump chose Andrew Jackson.
I found that interesting since, one freed the slaves, while the other killed all the Indians, but back to Joe who replaced Andy with Ben Franklin.
YES!!! A major hero of mine.
He has all my heroes around him, including Abe, FDR, and busts of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy.
He even has Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton purposely paired, to show, two men with opposing views can still agree to disagree.
He also brought back, Childe Hassem’s 1917 painting…
Avenue in the Rain, that JFK favored along with Presidents Obama and Clinton.
I have a poster of it framed in my living room that never fails to trigger a smile and on occasion, a salute.
I’m just happy my new President feels the same way that I do about those who, armed with great patriotism, came before him.
God Bless America, finally.
SB 🙂
How interesting is that? You can definitely get an idea of a person by the art they favour. (I.was going to say judge but that would be judgmental 🙂)

Susannah, I am so hopeful for the next four years (maybe eight). I was so disillusioned and disappointed with the last four years. Let’s pray that President Biden’s choice of art to surround himself with is an indication of things to come.

Was thinking while running, how great it must be to choose anything you want from the National, or Portrait Gallery. Talk about a perk. 🙂

Also, I think it’s better already. You can almost hear a collective sigh. If you can, read Peggy Noonan’s Saturday OPED in the Wall Street Journal. If I had your email, I’d send it to you. You would so, being as smart and patriotic as you are, appreciate it. 🙂

That Trump had Andrew Jackson on the wall says everything you need to know about who and what he was.

I never knew he had his picture hanging till yesterday. You’re right, speaks volumes.

I would love to be able to pick out beautiful art from the National or Portrait Gallery. It would be hard to choose, but I would start with Degas. Here is a National Gallery virtual tour of Degas at the opera. https://www.nga.gov/features/degas-virtual-tour.html

Thanks John. What a treat! 🙂

There are several others on the National Gallery site too. I hope nobody noticed any of the pieces missing. I filled my trunk. 😊

If only. Paul Mellon did a great thing, siring The National. Last I was there, as you enter, a huge Calder Mobile greets you from the ceiling. It’s a guaranteed WOW moment.

I remember that. It was a wow.

I remember standing and watching it and being mesmerized. I was with someone who was doing a very good magpie impersonation with continuous nothing chatter. The net effect was I totally tuned out the disruption.

The National is a treat, no matter what. I remember the Matisse Room. I was in heaven.

Yeah I love his unusual use of color. Not popular in his day he and his fellow artists were labeled fauves (beasts).

Matisse blue is my favorite color. 🙂

As he said, “If it’s blue it isn’t necessarily the sky.”

There’s a West Wing episode I love where at the end, the whole senior staff is sitting on Josh Lyman’s steps drinking beer and one of them begins a toast, and one by one they all say…God Bless America. Always loved that.

Sounds good. Haven’t seen the West Wing. Watched Designated survivor for a while, but dropped it. With the Clown around, fiction was getting hard to compare with reality. Maybe we should give the West wing a try.

I’ll consider it?
Lucy? Seriously? I vaguely remember seeing a few late 60’s in Black & White. I was more into Mission impossible, Te Invaders and the Prisoner…

Yes ma’am. (Just asked since Americans are often fond of diminutives) Susannah it is. Take care.

It’s okay. I remember when the song…A Boy Names Sue by Johnny Cash, came out. I chased me everywhere I went. Made me loathe the name.

LOL. I sort of missed Johnny Cash. Though I know he’s an American icon. (Idol?) 😉
Never really listened to him. Just picked the song on Youtube. very cash. I can understand your “point of view” as Cash says. 🎶

What we choose to have in our home (or office) does tell a lot about us.

You’re right. I just read that if someone’s car is full of junk and needs a good cleaning, it tells you all about the person’s life who owns it. An unrelated fact, but you inspired the thought. Not a bad thing to inspire, right? 🙂

How could I possibly be surprised that Trump had Jackson? I didn’t know it, but I’m not surprised.

I didn’t know it either. I had read he was a Teddy fan, but Andrew must have been a secret. Did you know he fought 20 duels, and won them all? He was a killer alright, right down to his buckskin jacket. sigh

I think the only thing Trump duels is a 20 piece chicken nugget. And I know he wins that one.

He’s opening a gift shop in Palm Beach. I think . . .

I can see that…all the bling from his presidency.

Instead of the museum leading into the gift shop, it would be the other way around. And of course, the museum would be very small and it would have souvenirs.

I was watching a piece on my local news about this and was so happy to see that Ben, a Philly native, made the cut. I have a soft spot for him too!
